Why This Guide Exists

Don't Buy A Truck
Based On One Number.

A Ram's towing capacity can change dramatically depending on engine, transmission, axle ratio, cab, bed length, drivetrain, GVWR and other equipment. Two trucks with the same engine can therefore have different maximum trailer ratings.

That's especially important when shopping used. The badge on the tailgate does not tell you the complete towing story. This guide is designed to help identify the configuration before comparing its towing capacity.

Important towing warning

Published maximum trailer ratings are not a blanket rating for every truck in a model family. Never exceed the vehicle's GVWR, GAWR or GCWR. Trailer tongue weight also counts against available payload.

Buying Used?

Don't Trust
The Tailgate Badge.

A used Ram may have several possible towing ratings depending on how it was originally ordered. Before buying, identify the actual configuration.

01 — Identify The Engine HEMI, Pentastar, Hurricane or Cummins can produce dramatically different towing capacities.
02 — Identify The Transmission Older Ram trucks used several different automatic and manual transmissions. Don't assume every truck with the same engine has the same rating.
03 — Find The Axle Ratio Axle ratio can make a major difference in towing capability. Look for the original build information, axle tag or vehicle documentation.
04 — Check The Cab & Bed Regular Cab, Quad Cab and Crew Cab configurations can carry different ratings. Bed length can matter too.
05 — Check 4x2 vs 4x4 Four-wheel-drive versions can have different published towing ratings from otherwise similar 4x2 trucks.
06 — Check GVWR / GAWR / GCWR These ratings are just as important as the maximum trailer number. Payload and tongue weight must also be considered.

Towing 101

Numbers
That Matter

Understanding the terminology makes the factory towing charts much easier to use.

01

Maximum Trailer Weight

The maximum published trailer rating for a specific configuration when properly equipped. This is not automatically the amount every truck with that engine can tow.

02

GVWR

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. This is the maximum permitted weight of the truck itself including occupants, cargo, tongue weight and equipment.

03

GCWR

Gross Combined Weight Rating. This accounts for the combined weight of the truck and trailer.

04

Axle Ratio

A numerically higher axle ratio can provide gearing advantages for towing, but the actual factory rating still depends on the complete vehicle configuration.

05

Payload

Payload includes people, cargo and trailer tongue or pin weight. A truck can have a high maximum trailer rating but still run out of payload before reaching that trailer weight.

06

SRW vs DRW

Single-rear-wheel and dual-rear-wheel configurations can have very different payload and towing capabilities, especially on Ram 3500.

Research Method

Factory Ratings First.

This page is intended to organize Ram's published towing information into a dealer-friendly reference. Configuration-specific ratings should be verified against the applicable factory towing guide and the actual truck before towing.

  • 2026 Ram 1500: Factory Payload & Towing guide used for engine, transmission and configuration-specific ratings.
  • 2025 Ram 1500: Factory Payload & Towing guide used for historical comparison.
  • 2024 Ram 1500: Factory Payload & Towing guide used for historical comparison.
  • Older Ram trucks: Historical model-year factory towing charts should be used rather than estimating a rating from engine output alone.

Important: Maximum trailer weight and payload ratings are mutually exclusive in Ram's published towing methodology. GAWR, GVWR and GCWR should never be exceeded. Ratings may change because of configuration, options, equipment or product updates.
